ON THE JOB

Participation and being on the job is extremely important to Charlene. She is often invited to school events throughout the district and she never stops learning from each school's principal, teachers, students and parents. These "on the job" moments give her a glimpse into the happenings at each school and help her make important decisions with the board.

Successes During My Term
  • 1:1 Chromebooks in NHHS, EHS, CdM, with CMHS

  • AAA Bond Rating (Moody’s); AA+ Standard & Poor’s 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018.

  • We hired 58 new elementary teachers this year and had 866 applicants for those jobs.

  • Secondary English and Social Studies had 125 applicants.

  • There were 141 Classified Openings and over 8,000 applicants.

  • Teacher salaries in 82nd percentile; 11.5% increase from 2014-2018; with additional 2.5% this year.

  • We hired 45 Intervention teachers funded with Categorical money.

  • Began and expanded the Spanish Dual-Immersion program at Whittier Elementary K-3.

  • Began and expanded the Mandarin Dual-Immersion program at College Park Elementary K-3.

  • Began and expanded the Modern Scholars program at Adams Elementary K-3.

  • Expanded the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program to Rea Elem.

  • Already in TeWinkle, Ensign, EHS, ECHS, and NHHS

  • Expanded Preschool and after school Programs and increased partnerships with Boys and Girls Club in our after school programs and Project Hope Alliance for homeless students.

  • Adopted and Implemented Math and ELA instructional materials K-5; Math 6-8, piloting 9-12.

  • Addressed Math Pathway to continue Enhanced Math in 7th and 8th grade.

  • Nationally Recognized for Adoption Process in place since 2016.

  • 12 schools recognized as California Gold Ribbon Schools.

  • 2 schools recognized as California Distinguished Schools.

  • Transportation drives over 1 million miles each year.

  • We added 6 new grant-funded CNG busses this year and have applied for a grant for electric busses.

  • ​State and National Recognition for our “Bus in the Classroom” Program.

  • Developed Rick and Threat Assessment Protocols based on FBI model and supported by NBPD and CMPD.

  • Crisis and Support Team is in place with over 70 trained professionals.

  • Expanded our team of Social Workers and School Psychologists (which adds quality interns).

  • Added a Child Welfare Officer to address truancy; Truancy down 80% from 2014-2018.

  • 3 School Resource Officers (SRO) in Newport Beach; 2 SROs in Costa Mesa with substituted coverage until they are fully staffed.

  • Health Services has 20 RNs (most in OC); increased hours of health assistants.

  • Opened the Welcome Center at the BESST Center for all new families.

  • Move the Save our Youth (SOY) program into newly refurbished buildings at BESST Center.

  • Collaborated with CMPD for Park Ambassadors to assist our School Safety Facilitators to provide supervision for after school and evening events which use our fields.

  • Remodeled 13 elementary school offices to add secure check in.

  • Adopted Raptor technology to intensify and streamline visitor and volunteer check in.

  • Adopted Titan technology for better communication between administration, police, teachers, and staff during emergency situations.

  • Renovated two fields (CMHS and NHHS) and broke ground on CdM.

  • EHS pool should break ground in Jan 2019.

  • In Design Phase of EHS Theater project.

  • Added 6 new HVAC systems this summer; which brings total of 22 AC schools. 8 schools scheduled for next summer (2019); CMHS 2020; NHHS 2021.

  • Securing campuses with added/replaced fencing for controlled access.
